Tinnitus

TINNITUS - Symptoms and Treatment:

Mayo Clinic defines Tinnitus (TIN-ih-tus) as a noise or ringing in the ears. Many explain Tinnitus as an annoying sensation of hearing sound when no external sound is present. Tinnitus is actually fairly common with 1 out of 5 people affected. Much is unknown about the primary source of tinnitus but it’s often linked to age related hearing loss, injury to the ear and possible circulatory system disorder. Although bothersome, tinnitus doesn’t pose any serious health concerns.

SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms can vary in the type of sound someone hears.
+Ringing
+Buzzing
+Roaring
+Clicking
+Hissing

These noises can vary in pitch and tone and can be felt in one or both ears. Typically Tinnitus is “Subjective”, meaning the sound is only heard by you. This can be a result from problems in the outer, middle, or inner ear, hearing problems or neurological problems in your auditory pathways. In some cases tinnitus can be “Objective”, in these cases an inner ear muscle contraction or blood vessel problem can be heard by a physician during examinations.

TRADITIONAL TREATMENT:
1. Noise suppression- White noise machines, hearing aids, masking device.
2. Treat underlying health condition- Earwax removal, treat blood vessel condition.
3. Change a new/current medication- Medications can produce side effects including tinnitus so stopping or reducing your dose may be advised.

TREATING TINNITUS WITH NST:
The basis of Neurosomatic Therapy is an extensive evaluation of posture and a deep understanding about consequences for the body when it deviates from a balanced posture. The combination of these two beliefs gives NST an advantage over many other treatment techniques. For instance, many patients that have suffered a car accident or any severe head trauma suffer from tinnitus at some point during recovery. Because we understand trigger points and their influence on the body, it is easy to find the relationship between the muscles on the front of your neck that spasm during trauma will send referred pain into the ears. Many patients note feeling the tone or pitch of the sound they are hearing go down in volume when these trigger points are neutralized properly. Imbalances in the cranium due to a larger problem stemming from the pelvis can disturb the biomechanics of the body and cause cranial bones to shift, affecting ear function as well as causing other issues that may be contributing factors to the entire condition.
